250 Backers Strong! + Your Burning Questions answered...

If you just joined us: Thank you!

If you've been with us for a while: Thanks again!

In my last update, I promised a little more information on the book. Which means it's time to dip into the...

Metropolis Mailbag:

Frequent Frier Richard Boom asks:

Will this be a miniseries? Just curious how many issues to count on :)

Great question, Richard!

The original story bible clocked in at 7 episodes. Initially, I wanted to make this something I could pitch to publishers, so I toyed with the idea of shortening it… but the story is just too epic to tell in one mini.

Now that Kickstarter has provided a viable alternative to traditional publishing, I’ve broken it up into two arcs: the first will be four issues. After that, I may release the second arc as two double-sized issues to wrap it all up. (The jury's still out there.)

But if the public demands more? Well, we could tell stories in this universe for a long, long while.

Only time (and sales) will tell!

Artwork!

It's no secret that the Conan stories by Robert E. Howard were a big influence on this series. "Queen of the Black Coast" is one of his best, and you can bet I couldn't wait to put our intrepid heroes on a boat.

And since we're playing with a bunch of public domain characters...

And since Cthulhu lives under the ocean...

It was pretty inevitable that this issue was gonna be Frankenstein vs. Cthulhu.

And while I have no Cthulhu pages to show you (hey, we gotta save some surprises for the book!) here's a quick peek at some sea-faring artwork from Mick, which, I gotta say, looks pretty stunning in B&W:

Speaking of B&W artwork, the original art to our standard cover is still available, as are a few of the large commissions. Snap those up before they're gone!

FRIENDS OF FRIED

Speaking of getting it before it's gone...

Please don't tell him I said this, but Kevin Joseph is one of the nicest guys in comics. And he also happens to make one of my favorite comics on Kickstarter.

If you've backed any of my other campaigns, you've heard me sing the praises of TART before. Please indulge me while I do it again, because Kevin and artist Ludovic Salle are back with the third hardcover collection of this absolutely gorgeous series.

TART is about a group of time traveling demon hunters who use their witchlike powers to stand against the forces of Hell. I like to say this is the perfect book for people who miss Buffy as much as I do and/or people who love great artwork.

What Kevin and Ludo have achieved with this series is truly remarkable, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't admire their ability to make a long-running comic book in this day and age.

(Again, please don't tell him I said that.)

There are two weeks left to make this third hardcover collection a reality. So if you'd like to Kickstart some TART...

Speaking of gorgeous artwork, our pal Sam Noir is back with FRANKENSTEIN VISIONS - Deluxe Art Book. A MONSTER Gallery!

Over 35 creators (including Ken Lashley & Richard Pace) offer distinct and stunning interpretations of Mary Shelley's iconic gothic thriller!

For generations, FRANKENSTEIN has possessed our nightmares and captivated our imagination as a timeless story told and retold across all media. Now the fine folks at Slampress Tomes are UNLEASHING a murderer's row of creators and allowing them to present their unrestrained interpretation of the haunting tale.

A 72 page gallery featuring over 35 top tier artists presenting their unique interpretations of the most famous and celebrated monster in all of literature and popular culture.

(Please note that this is a lavish high quality Art Book, and does NOT contain the full text of the original Frankenstein novel.)

We've snuck a peek at the campaign and the artwork is truly a vision to behold.  So if that sounds like a monster of a great book...

OK! That's all for now. Back soon to let you know about the latest book you've added to bonus bundle now that we're safely over 250 backers.

Thanks again for the support, and have a great weekend, everybody!

over 2 years ago – Wed, Oct 25, 2023 at 07:04:10 PM

Hey there! Are we one week into this thing already?

As we blaze towards 250 backers, all of us here in The Blazing World wanted to take a minute and give thanks for your support.

Our comics, quite literally, wouldn't exist without you. And for that, we are extremely grateful.

So, thank you!

Two More Bonus Books

I promised you two more bonus books last time out as part of our indie bundle (available at the $10 digital deluxe tier and up!), so without further ado, here's a look at the next two books you've unlocked so far:

HAUNTING/Like Father, Like Daughter Crossover #1

Kat Calamia and Phil Falco are fantastic creators in their own right, but just like peanut butter and chocolate, they are two great tastes that taste great together. A couple years back, they teamed up with artist Rafi de Sousa to present: HAUNTING/Like Father, Like Daughter #1!

Bram is a bratty teenager who just wants to be left alone. Too bad wherever he goes, THE DEAD RISE!

Casey is a high school student whose father abandoned her to become a full-time superhero. She's finally forced to grapple with her complicated feelings towards him when she INHERITS HIS SUPERPOWERS!

And in this 44-page NEW READER FRIENDLY crossover: THEIR WORLDS COLLIDE!

When a Halloween Dance at Casey's (LFLD) high school is suddenly overrun with GHOSTS and ZOMBIES, she'll be forced to team-up with the mysterious Bram(HAUNTING) to take on the supernatural threats and save her classmates!

Can Casey and her friends discover who is reanimating the zombies in time? Find out in HAUNTING/Like Father, Like Daughter #1!

And to say thanks to Kat and Phil for sharing their book...

I've gotten to know writer Farhan Qureshi pretty well during our time together as part of the ComixLaunch Mastermind, and I love his fertile imagination. Inspired by his love of movies like Big Trouble in Little China, Farhan came up with a wish list of what he wanted for his next comic:

  • crazy fun adventure
  • sense of humor and irony
  • on-the-run team road trip
  • something you'd like to read again and again

He delivered in spades. In BATTLE PANDA, Kai, a misfit teenage panda, dreams of becoming a warrior. His world is turned upside down when his village's water supply runs dry thanks to the wolves who live upstream, forcing the Pandas out of Panda City. Overly confident, Kai is going to take the fight to the wolves. Only problem is, his training simulations haven't quite prepared him... Get ready for an epic chase road trip as Kai and friends go on the run in BATTLE PANDA: BIG TROUBLE IN PANDA CITY!

And to thank Farhan for sharing with us...

FRIENDS OF FRIED

I'll be back soon with more BBoF news, but before I go, here's one more great book I wanted to put on your radar...

Exorcists #1: A horror comic

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that God exists.

Got your attention? Writer Tom Leveen has impressed me with his work--his upcoming NIGHTMARE THEATER story blew me away, both in its original prose form and  as the finished comic--and this book was an automatic back from me. Here's the pitch:

Three unlikely survivors of a demonic possession apocalypse attempt a global exorcism to save the world from descending into Hell. Former soldier David Marshall recently lost his beloved wife, and with her, his will to carry on. Not quite able to take his own life, David instead sells everything that doesn't fit into the back of his Jeep, and with his dog Mags is ready to hit the road "like Caine in Kung-Fu."

That's until Rachel, a daughter he didn't know he had, bursts onto the scene pursued by a terrifying creature she insists is a demon. Barely escaping with their lives, David grudgingly agrees to hear more of Rachel's story  . . . and discovers his life is far from meaningless.

If that sounds like a hell of a good comic...

OK! Back soon to talk to you more about our book and to give you a peek at the latest pages we didn't put on the preview...

200 Backers Strong! + Bonus Bundle
over 2 years ago – Sat, Oct 21, 2023 at 08:28:34 AM

Hello from the Blazing World -

If you just joined us: Welcome! And thanks.

If you've been with us from the beginning: thanks again!

We have now safely cracked 200 backers, which means you have unlocked...

THE FRIENDS OF FRIED BONUS BUNDLE

Kickstarter is a community, and one way we like to spread the love is to share some fantastic books made by our friends. It's our way of saying "Thank You" for your support, and hopefully turn you on to some great books you may have missed the first time around.

For this campaign, we've decided to unlock 1 free (digital) book for every 50 backers who join us--so the more backers we get the more free books you get.

The Bonus Bundle will go out to everyone who backs at the Digital Deluxe ($10) tier and above.

Here's a look at TWO of the books you've unlocked (so far):

After defeating the steam drill in a race to build a railroad, John Henry finds himself transported into a different world where machines rule and hunt humans down for fuel. Is’nana and his father, Anansi the African Spider God of Stories, must find Henry and bring him back to his original world, but can they help Henry defeat the machine bent on hunting them down first?

Also, a young boy moves into a new home with his father and twin brother only to discover that it is being haunted by the Southern boogeymen, Rawhead and Bloody Bones. Can Is’nana save them in time?

Written & Created by Greg Anderson Elysée. Art by David Brame, Walter Ostlie, Lee Milewski, & Kat Aldrich. Letters by Andworld Design. Cover by David Brame.

Greg's created an awesome series here, and we're thrilled to be able to share it with you. If you'd like to check out his other work...

From the delightfully twisted mind of Ringo Award-winning comic artist Christie Shinn comes Demon Bitch: Sick. Christie has putting out these books since 2016, and they almost defy explanation... but a picture is worth a thousand words, and the phicture above says it all. Demon Bitch is not for the faint of heart (if you clutch your pearls and never stray far from your fainting couch, maybe skip this one) but if you're a little sick in the head like me, this is 27 pages of outrageous hilarity.

Speaking of Christie, she's back on Kickstarter with her latest for Demon Bitch, a campaign she calls I Hate You All.

MORE GREAT CAMPAIGNS

Before I go, I wanted to put one more campaign on your radar.

MONSTER OR MASTER #1: A Epic Thriller with classic Monsters

The paths of vampires, werewolves, and Frankensteins monster collide in 1897 Japan. Think Seven Samurai meets Penny Dreadful.

Did that pitch catch your attention? It sure did mine. Publisher KJ Murphey has what appears to be a fantastic book, and with about 68 hours to go, it could use some help getting to the finish line.

Monster or Master is the story of three cursed killers whose paths collide in 1897 Japan. One wants to take over the world, one wants to save it, one is desperate and on the run.

Presented by GWP Monster or Master #1 is the first of three forty-four-page issues of horror and fantasy inspired by classic black and white publications such as Eerie and Creepy. Written by John Escobales and featuring art by Ka Emong with variant covers by Comic Book Superstar Liam Sharp, GWP's home artists Keith Murphey and Hector Rodriguez as well as a litany of great art spread across covers, trading cards and other paraphernalia by some of our favorite friends and colleagues.

"...for anyone who loves a great yarn and lovely art-..." Liam Sharp

If that sounds like your kind of book, hurry up and...
